Fourth of July celebrations in Fairport

FAIRPORT, N.Y. (WHEC) – Communities all across our region came out to celebrate our Nation’s birthday on this Fourth of July.

News10NBC takes you to Fairport where families and friends came together to show their patriotic pride. Fairport residents we talked to have been waiting all year to celebrate our nation’s birth, and the freedoms we enjoy.

"This is a big Fairport event. So we look forward to this every year, " Kathleen Cloonan said just before the parade through town started.

Thousands of people wearing their best "Americana" clothing lined the parade route in Fairport to wave their American flags, and thank community members who either served, or are currently serving to keep our country free, and safe. Both young—and old—celebrate the Fourth of July in their own way.

Sam Davies said, "It represents how our founding fathers created America and freed us from the oppression of the British Empire."

Cloonan added, "We need to remember how important this day was back in 1776. So yeah this is the birth of our nation."

Military veterans, marching bands, politicians, and first responders all participated in the parade, but the best part for young children along the parade route is always one thing.

"The candy," said one young child.

Even British ex-pats like Barry Childs were out celebrating the 4th.

"Yes, we lost a country on this day," said Childs.

In Perinton, a different kind of parade. This one features runners on a 4-mile run to celebrate the holiday.

"I saw one guy that I was running with him for a while he was running holding the American flag the whole time. I think it was a good symbol to just kind of all come together for the holiday, and kind of celebrating everyone that served their time," said race participant Maddy Sehnert.

Fellow race participant Jason Olson added, "I think it just brings camaraderie, and support from the community. It shows that we’re all residents. We’re all here to cheer each other, and encourage each other."

"Happy Fourth of July everyone," said one young boy during the parade.
