ROCHESTER, N.Y. — One person is dead after an officer-involved shooting on Murray Street.

At a press conference Sunday afternoon, Rochester Police Chief David Smith said that calls came in around 8:30 a.m. describing two males in the area, one of them carrying a handgun. 

Police said that when a responding officer was talking with one of the suspects, another police car pulled up and that’s when the suspect carrying the gun took on off on foot.

Chief Smith said that’s when officers began chasing the suspect, who he said pulled out what looked like a handgun.

Rochester Police said that the officer who shot the suspect discharged his weapon four to five times before shooting the suspect in the upper body.

The suspect, a man in his 40’s, was taken to Strong Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Release of the body cam video is pending but Chief Smith said it will be released at some point in the future.

“I’ve been to the scene. I walked the scene. I’ve seen the gun. I’ve watched the body worn camera video. Bear in mind, it’s Christmas Eve, tomorrow is Christmas and the folks who do most of our tech work are civilians who are off. We will work diligently to get that released as soon as it is possible,” Smith said.

The Attorney General’s Office, District Attorney’s Office, and RPD’s Major Crimes Unit are investigating — which is standard protocol for any officer-involved shooting.

No officers were injured.

Murray Street between Otis Street and Lyell Avenue was closed to traffic while police investigated. It is now back open.
