School canceled for Greece Athena middle and high school due to water main break

GREECE, N.Y. — School is canceled on Thursday for Greece Athena middle and high schools because of a water main break on campus, the district announced.

School will remain in session for all other campuses in the Greece Central School District. Here is a statement from the district about the water main break:

“We became aware of a water main break affecting Athena Middle and High Schools this morning. Staff were called in to assess whether the issue could be quickly repaired. When we learned the fix was expected to take most of the day, we made the decision to cancel school for Athena Middle and High School only. We do not know the exact cause, but I am told that typically water main breaks happen due to freezing and warming temperatures, causing ground movement to impact the pipes.”
