RPD Chief, Officers remember Ofc. Mazurkiewicz

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — After the family of fallen RPD Officer Tony Mazurkiewicz spoke at the funeral, we heard from police.

RPD Chief David Smith began by thanking the Mazurkiewicz family for sharing their husband, father and grandfather with the department and the people of our city.

“And although we all know how much being a cop meant to him we also know his family was his true priority,” Chief Smith said.

Then chief smith turned his attention to the RPD officers in attendance.

“Thank you from the bottom of my heart for what you do every day and every night. I don’t get to see you as often as I’d like but your work is not lost upon me, there is no nobler a life than a life of service,” he said.

Tony Mazurkiewicz dedicated a lot of time to the police union.

Union chief Mike Mazzeo said “Maz” had no patience for police critics or for police who didn’t try their best.

“For those who tried, he’d give them everything he had including his life,” Mazzeo said.

At the funeral today was officer Sino Seng.

He was Mazurkiewicz’s partner in the tactical unit the night of the shooting, and Seng was shot.

We learned that after he was wounded, Seng pulled Mazurkiewicz from the line of fire and shot back in the direction of the shooter.

“Officer Seng, your heroic actions likely prevented further injuries to officers and citizens who were at the scene," said Tactical Unit Captain Ray Dearcop. “You sir—are a hero."

That was followed by a 30-second standing ovation.
