Rochester’s gas prices fell by $0.33 throughout July

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) – Average gas prices in Rochester on Monday are $0.33 lower compared to the start of July. This week, gas prices fell by 7 cents according to AAA.

Prices have also fallen statewide and nationally. This week, New York State’s average has fallen by 8 cents and the U.S. average fell by 15 cents. Lower crude oil price is contributing to the decrease.

Rochester’s average gas price is $4.61, which is higher than Buffalo, Syracuse, and Batavia. That’s also higher than the state’s average of $4.52.

According to a survey from GasBuddy, the cheapest station in Rochester on Sunday was $3.99 per gallon, while the most expensive was 90 cents higher. You can find the cheapest local stations through a link to GasBuddy.

Average gas prices are $1.42 higher in Rochester and $1.30 higher statewide compared to August 2021.

The state and Monroe County gas tax relief, which entered its third month, aims to save consumers $0.28 per gallon at the pump. News10NBC reported on a study that suggests that, while consumers benefited initially from the NY gas tax relief, eventually middlemen and retailers absorbed the gas tax, and consumers save little money. The study said it’s difficult to enforce a gas tax holiday intended to lower prices for consumers.

Gas prices have skyrocketed over the past year because of rapid recovery from the pandemic increased the demand so high that supply couldn’t keep up. Europe’s restrictions on importing Russian oil also scrambled world oil prices, affecting the U.S. even though the U.S. imports very little Russian oil.

A GasBuddy analyst said gas prices may rise soon because of a tight supply of gas in the northeastern U.S this week. A price increase would depend on the price of crude oil as well.
