First Alert Weather: A dry start, but rain returns Tuesday

ROCHESTER N.Y. (WHEC) — We’ll continue our somewhat unsettled start to the month of May, with another area of low pressure and batch of rain tracking through western New York on Tuesday. Tuesday will start off dry with some sun, and temperatures warming back into the 60s.

But an area of low-pressure tracking overhead will bring rain showers into the Rochester area by mid-afternoon, with some rumbles of thunder possible later in the evening. Some storms are likely south of us into Pennsylvania, and we’ll likely just get what is left over from those as they continue to track east by midnight. Some showers linger into the first part of Wednesday before drier, and a somewhat cooler air filters back in for the afternoon. Expect the majority of towns to see about a quarter to half-inch of rain Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. And that rain may be a good thing, as we could be entering a dry stretch of weather after that. Keyword: May.

Another area of low pressure and round of rain will once again move through Pennsylvania Friday and Saturday. There will be a sharp cutoff between rain in southern NYS and dry weather closer to Rochester, and we’ll be watching that dividing line closely. It may be the difference between a lovely weekend, and a soggy start to Mother’s Day weekend.

Speaking of Mother’s Day, the early forecast looks great, with sunshine and seasonably mild air. After that, we’ll get into a blocking pattern, which is great if you’re in the "sweet spot", but not so great if you’re stuck under the gloomy and damp weather. Right now, it appears we may very well end up on the sunny and dry part of that pattern, with temperatures slowly warming back into the 70s by the middle of next week. Stay tuned!
