Irondequoit man accused of 2-day crime spree that included 2 shootings, 2 chases and arson

ROCHESTER N.Y. (WHEC) — Police say in a matter of two days, an Irondequoit man was involved in two separate shootings, two police chases and a massive fire that caused more than $1 million in damage.

Marquis Hooks, 26, was arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service Taskforce in Irondequoit Thursday after an RPD investigation into the shooting of a 38-year-old that happened near Plymouth Avenue and Exchange Boulevard on April 12 and an Ogden Police Department investigation into a fire that destroyed a barn and attached structures in Buffalo Road that same day.

That fire produced smoke that was visible for miles.

It took several fire departments several hours to knock it down and the building which included three local businesses was a total loss.

Police are still investigating why Hooks set the business on fire.

"Now I really don’t want to comment at this point on what his connection is but I can say there is a connection," said Ogden Police Chief Chris Mears.

Mears said he does believe there is some sort of connection between all the crimes.

"We’re still putting those pieces together as well, there is definitely some connection between all of these crimes, just exactly what that is, we’re not really prepared to release that at this point," Mears said. "We’re just actually very fortunate that out of all of these crimes, no one is deceased. I don’t know how this happened, between the charges he has in the city, the chase and apprehension in Irondequoit and then this, honestly, I do not know how someone did not die, we’re very lucky and hopefully, he’ll be in a position where he’s not able to do this again."

Hooks was previously charged in connection to a different shooting earlier this month, the firing of shots into a home on Stanfield Terrace on April 10. None of the three residents were injured in that shooting. When he was arrested for that shooting, police said they found seven guns on him.

RPD and United States Marshall’s Service Task Force began investigating the more recent shooting after a man walked into the Public Safety Building with a gunshot wound. The man said he had been shot while sitting in his vehicle near Plymouth Avenue and Exchange Boulevard. He was treated at Strong Hospital for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the lower body.

Hooks was arrested at his Irondequoit home and was taken to the Monroe County Jail, where he is being held without bail.

He is expected to be arraigned on the charges related to the second shooting on Friday in Rochester City Court, and on Monday, May 2 for the arson and burglary charges.
