PENFIELD, N.Y. — A witness who works as a certified nursing assistant helped a driver who crashed his truck on Penfield Road on Tuesday. The road has since reopened.

Deputies say a truck was traveling east when it suddenly swerved and knocked down two utility poles before coming to rest in a front yard on Penfield Road near Hilcrest Drive around 9 a.m.

Deputies closed the road between Baird Road and Willow Pond Way for more than an hour so RG&E crews could clear the wires in the road.

The witness cared for the driver who she describes as a man likely in his 70s. Jennifer Ross says when she found him in the truck, his foot was still on the gas and the wheels were spinning.

“I was more concerned that he might be in shock or he seemed to be breathing okay,” Ross said. “But after I reached in and shut his truck off, his breathing started to become labored. I wasn’t sure if he had passed out or not. I took his pulse and it was very very weak and I could tell he was struggling to breathe.”

Ross says she monitored his breathing with her stethoscope until emergency workers arrived.

She said the man was in and out of consciousness. Deputies say they’re still investigating the cause of the crash. They reopened Penfield Road at about 10:15 a.m.
