GREECE, N.Y. — A crossbow arrow has been successfully removed from the chest of a dog that was shot in Greece over the weekend.

Two people are facing reckless endangerment charges after Greece Police said they shot the dog, apparently by accident during target practice, as the owner was walking the dog.

The Green Acres Veterinary Center in Erie County is treating the dog, named Bogart, and the center say he still has a long road to recovery. A former foster of Bogart set up a GoFundMe page to help the owners with the dog’s veterinary expenses.

The page has raised over $19,000 so far for the 5-year-old hound mix. The pages says:

“Fortunately, the arrow missed all of Bogart’s major organs, but he is in an oxygen kennel with a broken rib and is fighting for his life. He’s not eating and is surely missing his family. As you know, all of this treatment comes with a price tag, one that I am hoping we all can help them with.”

Greece Police responded to Adeline Park at 10:20 a.m. on Saturday. Officers met the dog’s owner and found that the dog that had been shot with an arrow in the torso. The dog was taken to an urgent care center and then taken to the veterinary center for surgery.

Police say the investigation led to a home on Denise Road, near Armstrong Road, where officers learned that two people were in their yard doing target practice with a crossbow. They said one of the arrows fired from the yard hit the dog as the owner walked him.

Officers charged James Smith, 56, and Linnette Torres, 45, with first-degree reckless endangerment. Torres also was charged with fourth-degree criminal mischief for injuring the dog. The ASPCA and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation are investigating, and there may be additional charges.

Police say it doesn’t appear Smith or Torres meant to hurt the dog, but say they acted in a reckless manner.
