Suspect in North Goodman Street double murder, pleads not guilty after extradition from Puerto Rico
ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Five months after an ambush double murder caught on security camera, the families of the victims got to see the man accused of the crime.
The suspect’s name is Hector Ramos Diaz. Police say he fled to Puerto Rico hours after the murders in February.
Chief Investigative Reporter Berkeley Brean found out that’s one reason why it took so long to get Diaz into a courtroom today.
Rochester police knew about the name Diaz very early on. They had him arrested in Puerto Rico in March. But because he was in Puerto Rico and because the case was in front of the grand jury, it took five months to get to today.
Because it was a sealed indictment, RPD couldn’t talk about Diaz’s arrest in Puerto Rico. And because he did not waive his extradition hearing, police had to get a warrant signed by the governors in New York and Puerto Rico.
“The governor has to review it. She has to send it to the governor of Puerto Rico and then ultimately when they both sign off on it is when we can go pick him up,” said Captain Frank Umbrino of RPD Major Crimes.
That was last week and on Monday, Diaz was formally charged with the murders of Wahlid Nazario and Frank Rosario Vazquez. Diaz pleaded not guilty.
The day after the murders on North Goodman Street in February, Brean got security camera video that showed what happened. The video shows Nazario and Vazquez crossing the street. The shooter can be seen in a crouch, running down the sidewalk and shooting the men at close range. Rochester police say 17 bullets were fired. The video shows the gunman walking away.
After court, the widow of Frank Vazquez was asked if she thinks justice is working.
“She said up until now it’s the beginning of the court so we’ll see from now til there,” said Maria Cruz, widow of Wahid Nazario, through an interpreter.
“He was a very good guy. And his best friend was a very good guy and it’s sad that we got to lose them this kind of way, in this kind of violence,” said Jennifer Soto, cousin of Frank Rosario Vazquez.
“Diaz is in jail on no bail. He’s going to be back in court next Tuesday because he has to appear in front of the judge who is going to handle his case going forward,” Brean said.
