ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A three-year-old boy is fighting for his life after being hit by a car on Mt. Read Boulevard late Wednesday night.

Joshua Navarro was able to get out of a door that hadn’t completely locked or shut and started walking into the lanes of traffic, according to his grandmother, Nereida Torres.

“The door didn’t lock properly. He saw the opportunity. My son was throwing out the trash. He saw the opportunity and he just…” Torres said.

Rochester police said the child was hit in one of the southbound lanes. It was dark at the time and raining lightly.

“Based on our preliminary investigation the child walked or was able to walk from a nearby house into the roadway and the motor vehicle crash happened in the roadway in the southbound lane of Mt. Read Boulevard,” said Captain Ryan Tauriello of the Rochester Police Department.

Joshua was rushed to Strong Memorial Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery.

“By midnight he was in surgery. By one he was out. They had to take half of his skull out to take the pressure off his brain,” Torres said. “We’re praying that he really comes out of this and I know he will.”

Police are still looking for the driver who hit Joshua. They have not released a description of the car or truck involved. Some of the security video at the scene is described as inconclusive.

If you have any information that might help police identify the car or truck that hit this 3-year-old, call 911.
