Tornado confirmed in Genesee County; Region set record for tornado warnings
GENESEE COUNTY, N.Y. — The National Weather Service has confirmed that a tornado touched down in Genesee County on Wednesday afternoon amid storms caused by the remnants of former Hurricane Beryl.
The First Alert Weather team found out on Thursday morning that the tornado was confirmed between Darien and Alexander. It was an EF-0 tornado which is the weakest category.
There were also an EF-0 tornado and a separate EF-1 tornado in Erie County on Wednesday, in addition to an EF-1 tornado in Erie County.
The National Weather Service in Buffalo set a record on Wednesday for the most tornado warnings issued in a day at 18. Across New York State, there were 38 tornado warnings on Wednesday. That’s the second most issued in a day, next to only May of 1999.
A tornado warning means that a tornado may be imminent for a particular area and time frame. That’s different from a tornado watch, which means that the conditions may be right for an isolated tornado.
The tornado in Genesee County had a peak wind speed of 75 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service. It lasted for a mile and had a width of 50 yards.
There were over a dozen reports of storm damage in the Rochester area but so far, there have been no reports of injuries.
