Woman dies after hit-and-run crash on West Avenue
ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Officers are investigating a deadly hit-and-run crash on West Avenue Friday morning.
Police say they responded to the scene just before midnight, and found 46-year-old Lashawnda Leggett. She was rushed to Strong Memorial Hospital, where she died from her injuries.
The vehicle that hit Leggett fled the scene before police got there.
Leggett had been sitting, hanging out, outside the bar at P.I.’s Lounge. The driver backed up, slamming into her, with enough force to smash a wall, ultimately killing her.
Witnesses told News10NBC Leggett and the driver were just inside the bar earlier. Security footage shows Leggett sitting and chatting with folks as they left the bar. Moments later, you can see the SUV backing out pretty quickly, not stopping and smashing right into Leggett. The vehicle pauses for 8 seconds before pulling out and stopping. You can see a man walk up to the SUV and point toward Leggett before getting in the SUV and driving away.
Richard Ray saw it happen.
“I came over here to get into my car, and all of the sudden i heard this boom, and get out. … I don’t know, he was just inside the bar, everybody was drinking, the young lady had been singing — it was karaoke night — and I was about to go home — and boom!” Ray said.
After the SUV left, people started rushing toward Leggett, but the couldn’t save her. She died at the hospital.
This is an ongoing investigation, and anyone with information in urged to call police.
