Child and his father injured in dog attack in Canandaigua

CANANDAIGUA N.Y. — A dog attacked a child and his father on South Main Street in Canandaigua on Thursday morning, the Canandaigua Police Department confirmed.

The attack happened at 9:44 a.m. Police say the victim, a 43-year-old man, was walking on the sidewalk with his 10-year-old son when the tan pit-bull dog ran from behind and attacked the son. As the father was trying to help, the dog started attacking him — as the child ran to a nearby business for help.

That’s when bystanders and officers helped to wrestle the dog off the father.

Both had significant, but non-life-threatening injuries, and an ambulance rushed them to Strong Hospital. A bystander was also injured while trying to help control the dog and was brought to F.F. Thompson Hospital in a private car.

Officers say the investigators identified the dog, and say it’s run around before and people have complained, and was not properly licensed.

Police explain the same dog attacked a 3-year-old playing in their lawn on Chapin Street, earlier this month on August 12.

On August 19, the dog was found running free in the same neighborhood. The Canandaigua Police Department issues a summons to the owners on that same day for letting the dog run at large.

They were scheduled to appear in court on August 20.

This investigation is ongoing.
