UPDATE: One dead after shooting, one in custody in Lyons; Sheriff says no further danger to public
LYONS, N.Y. — One person is dead in Lyons and one in custody, according to Wayne County Sheriff Robert Milby.
According to Milby, one person was killed by gunshot wounds Saturday morning on Maple Street, near Culver Street. He said a 911 call about a domestic incident with shots fired came in at 10:30 a.m., and the shooter had fled the scene. The Sheriff’s Office and New York State Police responded, and the shooter is in custody, Milby said.
The sheriff said police found the shooter shortly after arriving on scene.
“Shortly after 10:30 this morning, 911 received a phone call about a domestic indicent that occurred, a report of gunshots,” Milby said. “Our officers responded and were able to confirm that one person was deceased at the scene and the person who was accused of the shooting was not on scene. Several officers responded, not only from the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, but as well as the New York State Police and the State Police Aviation Unit. We took that person into custody a short time afterwards.”
The sheriff said there is no further danger to the public.
“Originally, there was a report that there was an active shooter on the loose and it was in progress in the hamlet of Lyons. I’m here to dispel all of those rumors, and there is no further danger to the public,” Milby said.
Neighbors like Sonya Sanders say incidents like this are rare in Lyons.
“Pretty surprising, and it is very quiet here other than, you know, just people out and about walking their dogs and kids playing,” she said. “You don’t really have a lot of commotion around here.”
