9th anniversary of Boston Marathon bombing

BOSTON, MA (NBC/WHEC) – Friday marks the ninth anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombing.

On April 15, 2013 the city of Boston came under attack, when terrorists planted two-homemade bombs near the finish line of the marathon.

Three people lost their lives that day and more than 260 were injured in the attack.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev and his brother Dzhokhar Tsarnaev were responsible for the attacks. Tamerlan was killed in a confrontation with law enforcement a few days after the attacks. His younger brother Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was convicted in 2015 for his role in the blasts and sentenced to death, although he continues to file appeals.

This year’s event is on Monday. Security is tight as always, but concerns were heightened after Tuesday’s subway attack in New York City.
