ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A group of children at the Irondequoit Public Library had their hockey hero read to them on Monday night.

Rochester Amerks Captain Mason Jobst read during the first event in the 19th annual Reading Power Play program, in partnership with the Monroe County Library System. Jobst read stories, gave a hockey demonstration, and answered questions. Team mascot The Moose also joined him.

There will be nine other reading events through January. Two of the events will take place at Wendy’s. There will be a raffle and an autograph session at each event. Youth in attendance can get a free ticket to any home game in the regular season. You can see the Amerks’ schedule here.

One Amerks player says reading to kids is a full-circle moment.

“I know that there are some players who grew up doing this and got a chance to see players when they were kids,” Amerks player Andrew Mossbrooks said. “You’re getting out and you’re showing kids of all ages that a hockey player, a professional, someone that they can look up to is somebody just like them.”
