Veterans Day guide: Ceremonies in Brighton, Irondequoit, and more
ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Monday marks Veterans Day, a federal holiday to honor those who have served in the U.S. military.
In Monroe County, there are over 31,000 veterans which make up 4% of the population, according to the most recent Census. The Rochester area is honoring local veterans with events leading up to Veterans Day and on the day.
On Friday, the Rochester Institute of Technology held its 13th annual Veterans Day Breakfast with an Army veteran who spent eight years on active duty as the keynote speaker. On Saturday, the county hosted a Veterans Day parade that ended at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Gary Beikirch Park within Highland Park. A float carried Vietnam War veterans.
On Monday, many towns are holding ceremonies to honor veterans. Here is your guide:
Monday, Nov. 11: Stars & Stripes VeteRun
The Stars & Stripes VeteRun, a 5K race to support Honor Flight Rochester, takes place on Monday. It starts at 10 a.m. at the Stewart Lodge in Mendon Ponds Park.
There’s also a virtual 5K option. You can run a 5K anywhere and submit your time. You can sign up here.
Town of Pittsford
Pittsford will honor veterans with a ceremony at the Veterans Monument in Carpenter Park at the Port of Pittsford on 22 North Main St. It runs from 11 a.m. to noon.
Town of Irondequoit
Irondequoit’s ceremony to honor veterans will take place at the town hall on Titus Avenue. It begins at 11 a.m. and is sponsored by Irondequoit American Legion Post #134.
Town of Brighton
The Town of Brighton is hosting a ceremony to honor veterans. It will begin at 2 p.m. at the Brighton Veterans Memorial in Buckland Park on Westfall Road. The David J. Kauffman Post 41 of the Jewish War Veterans will be honored.
