Monroe County investigates deputies’ role in jail inmate fights
ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Three Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies are suspended without pay as an investigation unfolds into their involvement in inmate fights at the county jail.
The investigation focuses on two inmate fights and the deputies who were supervising the areas where the fights happened. Authorities are determining whether the deputies arranged the fights or allowed them to happen.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is working with the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office and conducting a separate internal affairs investigation.
“The deputies are in the housing areas obviously where they supervise inmates,” said Monroe County Jail Superintendent, Maurice Leone. “If a fight occurred and they didn’t take the appropriate actions and or do their official duties, we will investigate those. We take those seriously.”
A person injured during the fights received treatment at the hospital and has since returned to the jail.
