ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — A fire at the Hudson Ridge Tower apartments on Seneca Manor Drive claimed the life of one man, and displaced 18 others on Tuesday night.

Rochester Fire Department responded to multiple reports of black smoke coming from the building around 7 p.m. When they got there, there was heavy smoke coming from the back of the building.

While the engine crews were extinguishing the fire, the truck companies performed a search and found one man in apartment on the 11th floor. That man has succumbed to his injuries. Officials say that the fire started in his apartment, however, the cause of the fire is under investigation. The victim’s name has not yet been released.

Fire officials say that this was a third alarm fire due to the location of the fire and amount of people within the building. 16 fire companies responded and firefighters were able to get the fire under control in 20 minutes.

No other tenants of the apartment were injured and no firefighters suffered any injuries.

18 people have been displaced by the fire. The Red Cross is assisting those tenants.
