First Alert Weather: A rapid return to Spring for Rochester

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — The combination of chilly temperatures and several rounds of wet snow showers created a late winter feel to the day. Thus far there were no reports of an accumulation from this nuisance-type snowfall. Fortunately, this compact, fast-moving, low-pressure system that produced this unsettled weather is now moving out of Western New York. As a result, look for a slow improvement to our weather for the start of the workweek.

Tonight any lingering rain and wet snow showers will taper off and come to an end. The temperature will fall into the low 30s. Monday skies may brighten from time to time with mostly cloudy skies. The day should remain mostly dry, but there is a small chance of a sprinkles for later in the afternoon. It will not be chilly with the high temperature in the upper 40s. This warming trend will continue through mid-week. You can expect a mix of clouds and sunshine for Tuesday with a high temperature near 56 degrees. Wednesday and Thursday could bring a few scattered rain showers, but again it will be mild with the temperature will be in the middle 50s.

The end of the week will feature what is called a “cut-off” low-pressure system. This phrase is used to describe a low-pressure system that is largely cut off from the surrounding wind flow in the upper atmosphere. This means this type of storm is usually very slow-moving and usually is slow to arrive and slow to leave a certain area. As a result, rain and eventually snow showers will return to the great lakes on Friday and Saturday. This will also usher in the chilly temperatures again as readings will likely return to the 40s for the end of the week.
