ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — A very deep trough located in the upper atmosphere continues to bring a persistent northwest flow of unseasonably cold air into the great lakes. As a result, the temperature has been running more than 20 degrees below normal today and even this late in the season, lake effect snow has been off and on for most of the day.

Rochester has seen a nuisance-type snowfall with most of the accumulation on grassy areas. However, the higher elevations south of Routes 5 and 20 have measured several inches of accumulation today. The combination of the cold air and the wind has it feeling more like early February.

The News 10NBC First Alert meteorologists see another 24 to 36 hours of winter-like weather for Western New York. Tonight will bring more lake effect flurries and snow showers with a fresh accumulation of 1 to 2 inches. Any untreated roads will be slick and icy. Expect a very cold night with the temperature falling into the upper teens and the wind chill running into the single digits.

Monday will bring more snow showers for the morning, but the snow should taper to flurries. The sun may break through during the afternoon. Again, it will be unseasonably cold the mercury only reaching the middle 20s for the day.

The turning point for more pleasant weather will come by Tuesday and Wednesday. You can expect less wind and much less chill for the middle of the week. Tuesday will feature skies becoming mostly sunny and a high temperature in the mid-30s. Wednesday the temperature readings will reach near 45 degrees with just the chance of a late-day rain shower.

Then spring will arrive for the last day of March! We expect a few rain showers, but it will turn very mild with the high temperature rising into the middle 60s.
