Deafopia kicks off this weekend

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Deafopia, a national event for the Deaf community kicked off in Rochester on Saturday.

Rochester is opening the door for opportunity, shopping, and a chance to mingle for the deaf community this weekend at the Main Street Armory.

The event offers 38 booths from organizations and businesses run by the deaf, or serving the deaf community. It also featured a special event for the new comedy silent movie "What."’

"I am so proud to have the chance to bring deaf people together. I’ve done lots of other events but I am looking to support deaf businesses, deaf organizations come together. I wanted them to have a safe space where they could grow their organizations, businesses, have ideas and make their businesses grow," Seth Gerlis, director of Deafopia added.

The gathering will continue with a showing of the movie at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf at RIT Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
