Good Question: Still waiting on your check from the state?

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Let’s answer a good question about the New York State Homeowner Tax Rebate Credit, a one-time payment to some 2.5 million New York homeowners who qualify.

Several viewers reached out, saying where is it? Look at this from Sandra:

“I received my STAR check. This year, the government was providing us with an additional credit which was supposed to arrive before the school tax bill is due (Sept. 1-Oct.1). Family and friends have received their checks weeks ago. Still waiting!”

She is not alone. Here’s the thing. The state started to send out the homeowner tax rebate credit checks months ago, in mid-summer.

You are covered if you meet these three conditions:

• You qualified for a 2022 star credit or exemption
• You had income that was less than or equal to $250,000 for the 2020 income tax year
• Your school tax liability for the 2022-2023 school year that is more than your 2022 star benefit.

The amount per check varies based on where you live and your income. I checked back in this week with the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance.

I’m told: “Checks are still going out. Keep in mind, too, not everyone is eligible. Also, if the value of the check is less than $100, by law the homeowner will not receive a check.”

If one is coming your way, the tax department also says: “our contact center cannot provide you with a specific timeframe.”

While you can’t check the timing of delivery, you can check the amount through the tax department’s website. When you fill it out, if the check amount field is “not eligible”, your credit would have been less than $100. So, no check.
