Ibero-American Action League collecting monetary donations to help residents of Puerto Rico

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Rochester area organizations started collecting hurricane relief supplies on Monday that will soon make their way to Puerto Rico. News10NBC talked to the Ibero-American Action League where plans are being made to help residents of the island.
Tuesday marks five years to the day that Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico, and many of the same people who took part in the relief efforts then, are back to help out once again.
Led by Ibero, the organization is calling on community leaders and other organizations to stand in solidarity with Puerto Rico. Ibero is also asking for help in preparing monetary donations for the more than 1 million island residents who are currently without any electric power, or utilities.
The storm brought over 20 inches of heavy rain to the Caribbean island located over 18,000 miles from Rochester, causing massive flooding and landslides. We talked to Angie Perez-Delgado, President and CEO of Ibero about the call to action in the community.
“Our call to action is to bring our partners to create access that is fast, and not full a lot of red tape, for families that show up, and to leverage this space as a central hub for when families do arrive. So that when you arrive, you’ll be able to get all your needs met without having 10 appointments, or jump through 10 different organizations,” said Perez-Delgado.
