Ground broken for ‘Buy the Block’ initiative

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Officials from the Department of Housing and Urban Development broke ground on one of six homes in the city of Rochester, aimed at strengthening formerly redlined neighborhoods.
It’s all part of the city’s “Buy the Block” program. The goal is to build new, single-family, high-quality homes for qualified residents in neighborhoods that have experienced a long history of disinvestment.

The first phase of the project is centered around Northeast Rochester—between Upper Falls Boulevard and Clinton, Clifford, and Hudson Avenues.

City officials hope to build up to 100 new homes in under-invested areas.
Alicka Ampry-Samuel, the HUD Regional Administrator for New York and New Jersey, said that Rochester’s program will help to achieve housing justice.
“Wealth building and righting historical wrongs are two of HUD’s highest priorities, and Rochester’s Buy the Block Initiative is doing that by providing homeownership opportunities to low-income families and building in formerly redlined neighborhoods,” Ampry-Samuel said. “I look forward to witnessing Rochester’s increase in housing production and proving that lifting our residents benefits us all.”
Buy the Block is supported by $13.3 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds.
