Mayor Evans responds after 6 people shot overnight

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Six people were shot at four separate scenes on the streets of Rochester Wednesday night leaving one man dead. Rochester Mayor Malik Evans says these shootings are unacceptable, and something the city will not tolerate.

News10NBC hears from the Mayor, and his frustrations when it comes to gun violence.

“This gun culture has to end in terms of individuals using illegal guns,” said Evans.

Gun violence kept Rochester Police quite busy Wednesday night as they responded to these shootings in just over an hour.

“These are not people that don’t know each other. These are people who know each other. Sometimes family members, friends, and they are escalating, and it’s turning into gun violence,” said Evans.

Police say a man in his 20’s was shot around 9:30 Wednesday night on Wilson Street. He was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Just 20 minutes later, a triple shooting on Frost Avenue near Genesee Street. Their police found a 17-year-old male. He was also taken to Strong Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Two more male victims in their 20’s also arrived at the hospital in private cars. They’re expected to survive. Then, around 10:30, police were also sent to a shooting on Weaver Street. They found a man in his 40s who died at the scene. Police tell us these incidents are not connected.

“Not at all. Again there is no indication of that whatsoever. Obviously, they’ve all happened within the past hour, and that’s the only connection to them. There’s zero connection that we’re aware of at this time,” said Captain Ryan Turiello.

Earlier in the evening police say a shooting on Harris Street near Avenue D sent one man in his 30s to the hospital. He got there in a private car and is also expected to survive. Mayor Evans says the City will not give up in its efforts to end gun violence.

“This is something we as Rochesterians are gonna have to deal with. It’s gonna be done through hard work. The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary, and if we’re going to have success eradicating gun violence we’re gonna have to keep working at it, and that’s what we intend to do at the City while working with our partners,” said Evans.

Despite these shootings, Evans says so far this year almost 600 illegal guns have been removed off the streets.
