On the heels of two more overnight murders, First Genesis Baptist Church hosts Murder Victim Remembrance Event

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Community members are devastated, over the number of murder victims from this year. Some saying, murders over the weekend hit hard.

The emotions you could feel inside First Genesis Baptist Church were strong. One by one, murder victims names were called out so the community could grieve together. More than 60 homicides victims in Rochester this year. Families, strangers, police, all wondering when blood shed will end.

“Tired” was a word we heard many times at a murder victim remembrance event inside the church.

“I have 600 murder investigations that I’ve been responsible to supervise, that’s 600 families who have felt pain no one should ever have to feel, I’m tired, I’m tired of it,” Capt. Frank Umbrino said.

After another violent weekend in Rochester, police found a woman, between her 30s and 40s, dead in an alley near Fulton Avenue and Pearce Street on Sunday. Police did not detail how she died, but confirmed its a murder investigation. Then around 2 a.m. police were on the scene of another murder on Jefferson Avenue and Iceland Park.

The call was for a car crash. Police found a man in his 50s shot to death. Multiple sources have confirmed to News10NBC that the victim was a retired RPD officer. The community grieved these murders together.

“Particularly one from last night, we lost somebody that was deep to this community, prayers to his family, his wife, his children,” community activist Anthony Hall said, in tears.

Both murders are under investigation, police do not have any suspects right now. Victims’ names have not been released.
