ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A heated debate continues in the Monroe County legislature over the creation of new county legislative districts.
A familiar face weighed in during last night’s meeting. Former mayor Lovely Warren spoke before the legislature in support of the new map.

Supporters say it would create five majority black voting districts. Opponents say it unfairly packs minorities, specifically black voters, into districts that already have a long history of electing Black and Latino officials.
Here’s what former mayor Warren had to say: “What are we arguing about? There are 29 districts. We are arguing about five black districts. I never thought I’d see the day that Democrats are arguing harder than Republicans about five strong black districts that could potentially allow a person of color to be elected in that district.”
Warren pleaded guilty to a campaign finance charge last October. As part of that plea deal, she resigned as mayor.
