Arrest made in attempted arson from February 11 and 13

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — RPD has arrested 29-year-old Marty Javonte Smith as the suspect in both arson crimes.

Officials say Smith threw a Molotov cocktail at the front door of a house on Berlin Street early in the morning on Feb. 11. Luckily, it did not penetrate the door and nobody inside was hurt.

Two days later, on Feb. 13 at about 9:30 p.m., another Molotov cocktail was thrown at the same house. This time, it caused a fire within the enclosed porch of the home. Smoke detectors picked it up and residents were able to safely get out without injury.

As a result, RFD and RPD both investigated the incident, and have located and arrested Smith. On Feb. 19, they saw Smith driving and tried to pull him over in a traffic stop. RPD says he fled on foot and tried to pull out a loaded handgun from his waistband, but was disarmed and taken into custody without injury to officers.

Smith has been handed two weapons charges in addition to the two arson charges.

He is due in court Monday morning.
