Deputies: Woman rescued from Erie Canal following car crash in Palmyra
PALMYRA, N.Y. (WHEC) — Wayne County deputies say an Ontario County woman is in the hospital after her car crashed into the Erie Canal Sunday night.
The crash happened on State Route 31 in the Town of Palmyra just after 11:30 p.m. When crews got to the scene they say the woman was able to get out of the car, but could not swim and had to be rescued by deputies.
Deputies say she was driving on the route when for some reason, her car left the road, hit a ditch, struck two mailboxes and then crossed over the road again before going down an embankment into the canal.
She was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital but has since been discharged.
Deputies are still working to figure out how the crash started. No charges have been announced.
