HENRIETTA, N.Y. (WHEC) — With prom season just around the corner, a local organization is "fairy" excited to connect students with dresses.

The Fairy Godmothers of Greater Rochester are back to provide prom dresses to high school juniors and seniors who can’t afford them.

"It really is a night of passage for these young ladies, and quite honestly it’s very expensive," said Co-Partner Mara Axelrod.

Dresses are just $5 and accessories are $1 each, with a limit of one per type. That’s made possible through donations.

"They bring their high school ID and we get them set for their prom," Axelrod said. "It’s a bit but it’s absolutely a magical experience."

There have 3,000 dresses in stock.

"There are some very classic styles, but there also trendy styles, and let’s face it when you’re in high school you want a nice trendy style," Axelrod said.

She said most are gently used, three years old or less.

"We actually buy a fair number of them simply because we have a hard time with very small sizes, and our plus sizes, and we go from size zero up to about 30," Axelrod said.

The organization’s return has been a success so far, selling about 125 dresses in two days.

"They are in awe of all the dresses that we have," Axelrod said. "It is like coming to a retail store, and having just an enormous selection to choose from."

There’s a dress event every Saturday this month from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

They’re also available every Wednesday in April from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The pop-up shop is at Marketplace Mall.
