ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — A husband and wife were attacked in front of their 9-year-old child by a man wielding a hockey stick in the Civic Center Ramp garage Saturday evening as they were walking back to their car from the Blue Cross Arena, police said.
It happened just before 4 p.m. at 55 S. Fitzhugh St. Police say a man approached the family in the garage and started screaming for them to come over to him. When they didn’t and tried to get to their car, police say the man headed toward them, yelling aggressively.
Another person in the garage heard what was happening and asked the family if they wanted to get into their car to get away from the screaming man. As they made their way toward the concerned person’s car, the man tackled the father to the ground and started punching and kicking him, police say.
The victim’s wife got out of the car to try and help her husband, but the attacker grabbed a hockey stick from inside the car and started swinging at the woman. Police say her husband got between their attacker and his wife, taking several blows from the hockey stick.
They were eventually able to drive away with the help of the concerned person, then called 911.
The victim was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police say they arrested 24-year-old Tyrone Oliver of Rochester for the attack and charged him with second degree assault.
Police confirmed to News10NBC that Oliver is the same man who was arrested for assaulting a police officer back in 2020.
