Gates police investigating after reports of shots fired on Lyell Avenue
GATES, N.Y. (WHEC) — Gates police are investigating after reports of shots fired on Lyell Avenue Sunday morning.
Gates Police Chief Rob Long said shortly after 10:00 a.m. officers responded to the area of 1956 Lyell Avenue for the report of a male that had been shot.
When officers arrived, they engaged a male in the parking lot of the location in possession of a handgun. The male he dropped the handgun on the ground and cooperated with the officers.
Police say the detained male had been at the location with a disabled car. While trying to get help for his car a second male pulled up in a different car. A confrontation ensued and the arriving male pulled out a handgun. Both males wrestled for control of the handgun and a shot went off. The shot did not strike anyone. The male that brought the handgun and got into his car and fled east into the city.
Long said the male left behind who wrestled the gun away was whom was detained and once learned the details, he was released by officers. Chief Long said multiple witnesses at the scene provided corroborating stories of this event.
Long said following witness accounts they were able to put out a suspect car description. A short time after broadcasting the description a New York State Police stopped our suspect vehicle in the City of Rochester.
A male operating the car was detained and brought back to Gates for investigation.
As of now no arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.
