ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Here’s a Good Question about the new changes on the thruway.

John asked News10NBC’s Brennan Somers: My question is whether the equipment will also be used to determine whether a driver was speeding since all they need do is clock the time it takes for the vehicle to travel between any two gantries?

We’ve talked a little bit about this before and it’s bound to come up again now that the thruway’s cashless system is live with drivers passing under gantries over 90 that are officially up and working right now.

Those are scanning E-ZPasses and reading license plates for those getting toll bills in the mail. But they are not looking at your speed.

The NYS Thruway Authority told Somers under the Public Authorities Law it can only use the electronic toll collection system for tolls and there are no plans to do anything other than that.
