Good Question: Is Wegmans going back to 24/7 stores?

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) —First– this is a question we’ve heard from a lot of people: Wegmans stores are still closing at midnight, will that change any time soon?

The short answer here– no.

News10NBC’s Brennan Somers reached out to Wegmans for a comment, and a spokesperson told us:

“All of our Wegmans stores currently close at midnight. We have no plans to change these hours at this time.”

Wegmans. like so many other stores adjusted the times locations opened at different points over the last year and a half to give teams more time to clean and restock during the pandemic. These companies are looking at what’s best for business models going forward.

Many of Wegmans stores outside of New York already closed at midnight before COVID, and the company started to do that here. Two summers ago, in 2019, the Wegmans in Gates and on Ridge Road in Irondequoit ditched the 24/7 schedule.

That decision– according to Wegmans officials– was to move more employees around to the busiest hours for shoppers.

Now here’s another Wegmans-related question.

When is Wegmans planning to bring back the hand shopping baskets?

Those are now coming back, but not everywhere. Wegmans is leaving that up to "each division."

Here’s what the spokesperson told us:

“The decision to reintroduce blue baskets has been left up to each division. Our Rochester team has reintroduced blue baskets at select stores, and will continue rolling out based on customer interest. As always, the stores with blue baskets will clean them on a routine basis and offer cart wipes and hand sanitizer nearby for customers who choose.”

Our team saw them out at the East Avenue location just recently.

One final thing.

Back in May, Wegmans announced there were no plans to bring back hot and cold food bars, then earlier this month– the company quietly rolled out a hot bar at the flagship store in Pittsford.

That setup is also going in other locations, but at this point– Wegmans says there’s nothing in the works for any other self-serve bars.
