Good Question: What all will change with airport’s new name?

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — We’ve received a Good Question about changes at the Rochester airport.

This came up during one of the daily news interviews News10NBC’s Brennan Somers does on local radio station 98PXY each morning, when they were talking about the name change at the airport.

Earlier this month, Monroe County lawmakers moved to rename it "Frederick Douglass – Greater Rochester International Airport."

So what exactly is changing? Are the call letters switching to "FDI" or anything like that?

Once the county passed the measure, the next step is to file all the needed paperwork with the FAA.

That’s it. There’s nothing else needed for federal approval.

Eventually, you’ll see changes to the airport website, signs and commercials. County and airport officials say they are already reviewing drafts for new signs, but it will take another six to nine months so we will already be in 2021 before you see any actual changes.

What you won’t see change— "ROC"— the airport identifier.

It shows up on things like tickets or baggage tags. The FAA does have to sign off on any changes for those, but county officials say they are sticking with "ROC.”
