Good Question: What’s the deadline to register for a political party?

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) – It’s a big year for politics. We have the 2022 midterms, NY governor’s race and more.
Did you know there are two important deadlines– here now– voters need to know about?
News10NBC’s Brennan Somers came across this ‘alert’ on the NYS DMV website this week while taking care of something else. It states "Monday, February 14 is the last day to update party enrollment for 2022 primaries. All enrollment changes via the DMV website must be completed by Friday, February 11."
Here’s why, state law says Valentine’s Day is the cutoff to change your party for the summer primaries if you’re going through the DMV. The board of elections needs that info by Monday so if you want to make a change the easy way– online do it now.
If you miss Friday’s deadline and still want to change parties or enroll in one for the first time you can do that in person at the BOE by dropping off the needed documents by the end of the day Monday.
As for changes received after Monday through the week after the June primary, those will be set aside and opened the week after the primaries. Then your record will be updated.
