Group ends nightly City Hall demonstrations

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — A group of demonstrators is ending its nightly protests outside Rochester City Hall, but they say the fight isn’t over yet.

Demonstrators with Free the People Roc had been occupying City Hall for more than a week, seeking justice for Daniel Prude and his family. Although they headed home overnight, they say their movement is working based on a few facts.

Attorney General Letitia James was in Rochester Sunday to announce a new policy related to police brutality case, releasing body cam footage directly to the public.

New York Attorney General Letitia James spoke in Rochester on Sunday, promising to expedite the release of body camera footage in cases of alleged police misconduct that her office investigates. She also said her office “will be proactively releasing footage to the public on our own.”

Rochester City Council issued subpoenas in the independent investigation on Monday. Mayor Lovely Warren’s office, the City of Rochester’s law department, the Rochester Police Department and city council members have to produce documents requested by Oct. 2.

Another reason for taking a break, they say, is that taking care of their collective health and well-being is a "revolutionary act".

Protestors are planning "new actions in the coming weeks," although no details have been announced on what those actions are or when they’ll occur.

According to protestors, their fight is not over yet. In fact, they say their movement is just getting started.
