ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) – Learning about the importance of trees. Students and staff from the Cornell branch of Monroe County held a guided walk through the Marketview Heights neighborhood Saturday.
The goal was to stress how growing trees in areas with poor canopy cover can actually help the environment.
"You’ll have less energy usage because it’ll be literally cooler. The shade from the canopy they provide. There’s more wildlife that will be around. It will allow us to be outside and communicate with each other more and do more things like this in this environment right now,” said Antonius Chess, Natural Resource Educator, Cornell Cooperative Extension.
Speakers were there to help residents identify the trees in their neighborhood, and explain their ecological functions. The hope is that, if successful, this approach may be replicated elsewhere in the city.
