***Updated to clarify action taken against second student***

HILTON, N.Y. (WHEC) – The Hilton Central School District says a student will be disciplined under its code of conduct after wearing a confederate flag to school.

In a statement to parents, the district says it became aware of a social media post Friday, and that the display was not part of the school’s senior class costume parade. Two students were shown from behind, one with the confederate flag, and the other with a "thin blue line" flag draped over their shoulders.

Earlier a district spokesperson told News10NBC that the second student was not disciplined as that student’s actions were "viewed as freedom of speech". However, the district has now clarified that student was disciplined for posing in a picture with a student wearing the confederate flag.

The district’s letter condemned "hate speech and actions" and encouraged students or staff to report it or use the Safe School Helpline.
