ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Rochester Police are searching for a driver involved in a hit-and-run crash that killed a Rochester woman Monday night.
Police responded to Clifford Avenue near Hudson Avenue at around 9:30 p.m. and found a 20-year-old woman who had been hit. She was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Police say the woman, later identified as Nyasia Walker of Rochester, was crossing Clifford Avenue with a group of people when she was hit by the car, which was traveling west. Nobody else was hit, but the car kept going.
The car was described as having extensive front-end damage.
Police are working to figure out if the crash was an accident or criminal in nature.
"There’s one or two possibilities, number one, this was a tragic accident, the driver of that car got scared and took off," Capt. Frank Umbrino said. "If that’s the case, we strongly urge that person to contact us right away. If the person decides not to come in and talk to us, that leads us to believe that it was something other than a tragic accident."
