VICTOR, N.Y. (WHEC) — A local jockey will be riding in the Kentucky Derby this Saturday!
Reylu Gutierrez, a Victor native, will be racing the horse named "Barber Road." Gutierrez graduated from Victor Senior High School in 2013 and got his college degree from SUNY Cortland. His family has been a big part of Finger Lakes Gaming and Racetrack. His father, Luis, is a trainer and his three uncles are two jockeys and another trainer.
"I just always wanted to hang out with my dad. Always wanted to be around the people of Finger Lakes, because I grew up with them. They just taught me how to have responsibility and just be a better person," said Gutierrez.
This is Gutierrez’s first time in the Kentucky Derby, but raced ‘Jungle Runner’ in the 2020 Belmont Stakes.
Gutierrez is one of 20 jockeys that will compete for the $3 million purse in this year’s run for the roses.
