ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — A man wanted for a murder on Avenue A in Rochester was arrested in Texas, announced Rochester Police on Thursday.
Officers from the RPD and U.S. Marshals traveled to Harris County, Texas to arrest 23-year-old Trevor Smith III. RPD said the Rochester resident fled the state after the April murder of Jeremy Hamilton Jr.
Smith was charged with second-degree murder and is in a county jail in Texas. He was also charged with criminal possession of a weapon because a previous felony conviction prohibited him from possessing a firearm.
Police found Hamilton with a gunshot wound in his car at a gas station on St. Paul and Clifford on April 9. They said the shooting happened around Harris Street and Avenue A around 3:30 p.m.
Hamilton was rushed to URMC where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
An investigation determined that Smith was a suspect and the shooting was drug-related. RPD is working through the extradition process and Smith is expected to be returned to Rochester within the next two weeks. After his return, he will be arraigned on his charges.
