Masks and proof of vaccination status: Where you’ll need them

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Monroe County and all nine counties in the greater Rochester area meet the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)’s threshold for "high" COVID-19 transmission.

The CDC recommends fully-vaccinated persons wear masks in public indoor settings in areas of substantial or high transmission areas. The metric the CDC uses to designate an area "substantial" is 50 to 100 cases per 100,000 or a positivity rate between 8% and 10%.

Tops will require employees to wear masks beginning on Friday, Aug. 6, but is giving vaccinated customers the option to mask or not to mask, whichever they are comfortable with.

On Tuesday, Wegmans tweeted saying, "Effective immediately: After reviewing the updated guidance from the CDC & state & local health departments, we strongly encourage all customers, regardless of vaccination status, to wear a mask while shopping with us. All employees are now required to wear a mask in our stores."

On Monday, Monroe County announced that it was encouraging, but not requiring, people to wear masks indoors regardless of their vaccination status.

LOCAL RETAILERS

Goodwill of the Finger Lakes: Encourages everyone to wear a mask at all of its retail stores and donation centers. This also applies to anyone who is vaccinated. Should a customer want a mask, stores will have extras on hand.

NATIONAL RETAILERS

Walmart: The retailer is requiring employees in areas with "substantial" or "high" community transmission to wear masks regardless of vaccination status and encouraging, but not requiring customers to do the same.

Target: Target is requiring employees in areas with "high" community transmission to wear masks starting Tuesday, Aug. 3 and "strongly encouraging" customers to do the same.

Kohl’s: Kohl’s is requiring employees in areas with "high" community transmission to wear masks starting Tuesday, Aug. 3 and "strongly encouraging" customers to do the same.

McDonald’s: McDonald’s is requiring employees in areas with "high" community transmission to wear masks starting Monday, Aug. 2 and "strongly encouraging" customers to do the same.

Home Depot: Home Depot started requiring workers, contractors and vendors to wear masks in all of its stores, warehouses, offices, and customers’ homes and businesses, regardless of vaccination status on Monday, Aug. 2, but will only ask customers to wear masks in stores.

Apple: Apple started requiring all customers and staff members to wear masks in areas with high COVID-19 community transmission rates on Thursday, July 29.

MONROE COUNTY

County buildings: County employees will be required to wear face masks or face coverings in public and common areas in all county-operated facilities beginning Tuesday, Aug. 3.

Seneca Park Zoo: All guests, regardless of vaccination status, are required to wear masks in indoor buildings and exhibits. Visitors who are not fully vaccinated are asked to continue to wear face coverings at all times, including children ages 3 to 11. Advance ticket reservations are required, and members and general admission guests are encouraged to reserve their tickets online.

Louis S. Wolk Jewish Community Center of Greater Rochester: Masks not required, but recommended. All employees will be masked up, regardless of vaccination status.

Strong Museum of Play: Staff members in public areas will be required to wear masks. The museum is "strongly recommending" that all guests age two and over wear masks while in the museum.

Rochester Museum and Science Center: Beginning Saturday, Aug. 21, the museum will require all visitors, regardless of vaccination status, to wear a mask when indoors visiting the RMSC’s Museum, Strasenburgh Planetarium, and Cumming Nature Center.

The Little Theatre: Beginning Wednesday, Aug. 4, The Little will require masks to enter the building regardless of vaccination status. The theater will require people to keep them on at all times unless they are eating or drinking.

Frontier Field: The Rochester Red Wings are recommending that all fans wear masks while in indoor spaces at the ballpark, regardless of vaccination status. Those areas include the front office, team store, suite level, and concourse restrooms.

Nazareth College: Starting Tuesday, Aug. 3, unvaccinated and vaccinated people will be required to wear a face-covering over the nose and mouth at all times in campus buildings unless in a private space like an office, in a residence hall with only roommates, or while eating and drinking.

University of Rochester: All students, faculty, staff, visitors, and tenants—including those who are fully vaccinated—must wear a face mask while indoors on any of the University’s campuses and properties. More info can be found here.

St. John Fisher College: The college will require face coverings for everyone on campus, including students, employees, and visitors, in public indoor spaces effective Wednesday, Aug. 4, except when alone in an office or breakroom, alone or with a roommate in a residence hall room or when eating or drinking.
