ROCHESTER N.Y. (WHEC) — Tuesday afternoon Monroe County Legislators voted 23 to 5 to pass the gas tax holiday. This means in addition to the 16-cent tax savings from the state, you’ll see savings of 8 cents per gallon from the county.
This extra 8 cents combined with the state’s share of 16-cents now gives Monroe County car owners 24 cents in savings per gallon of regular gas.
Legislators held a special meeting that lasted just under a half-hour. Lawmakers voiced their opinions on why the resolution should, or shouldn’t pass. Since it’s now passed Monroe County drivers will start seeing the savings on the first of June. While the state will keep the gas tax holiday until the end of the year, Monroe County will keep it in place until the first of December. County Executive Adam Bello believes this could save Monroe County drivers as much as $5 million per quarter.
According to GasBuddy, gas prices here in Monroe County average about $4.26 per regular gallon.
