ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — The man who has served as the face of Monroe County’s battle against COVID-19 is getting some special recognition.

Monroe County Public Health Commissioner Dr. Michael Mendoza Monday received the State Senate’s Commendation Award.

It’s given to people in New York who have made a lasting contribution to their community.

Mendoza was awarded for his leadership during the pandemic.

"While I stand here today accepting this award, I also look ahead to all the work we have yet to do. we have to continue to work hard to vaccinate the rest of our population," Mendoza said. "We need to work to unpack all the trauma that’s been inflicted on mental health here in our community."

Mendoza said if we want to end this pandemic, more people need to get vaccinated.
