Monroe County seeking names of fallen service members for War on Terror Memorial

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Monroe County is seeking names of fallen service members for its War on Terror Memorial.

The county says it’s accepting names of those who lost their lives in an American military conflict from 1990 to the present day.

The memorial will include 10 concrete columns with different emblems for each branch of the military, Prisoners of War, those declared

Missing in Action, and four representing the Gulf War, United Shield in Somalia, Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and Iraqi Freedom.

In the center, there will be a life-sized battlefield cross statue on a raised pedestal depicting the boots, gun and helmet of a fallen soldier.

The county held a virtual groundbreaking ceremony in May of 2020, but construction didn’t actually begin until the spring of 2021.

When Monroe County announced it was searching for names Thursday, it said the memorial will be finished soon. Click here for more information about it.
