Monroe County Sheriff’s Office uses thermal imaging drone to find lost hiker
PERINTON, N.Y. (WHEC) — The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office pulled off a high-tech rescue of a 79-year-old hiker Thursday afternoon.
It happened just after noon at the White Brook Nature Area on Aldrich Road in Perinton.
Deputies say the man became disoriented after about an hour of hiking and wasn’t able to find his way back to the trailhead.
The Egypt Fire Department began the search using off-road equipment, and shortly after, the MCSO’s drone and K9 units were dispatched.
Ultimately, the drone unit found the hiker using thermal imaging infrared camera technology. The technology shows different heat signatures, helping deputies find people.
