ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Monroe County is now allowed to give volunteer firefighters and ambulance personnel a 10% real property tax exemption.

The governor signed the motion into law Wednesday, validating their value and rewarding their service.

This act starts on Jan. 1.

Volunteers who have been part of a qualifying organization for two years qualify.

It comes as many volunteer first responder organizations report a struggle to recruit and retain personnel.
